Upcoming changes to the School of Engineering’s IT services

From Drs. Kazerounian & Mundrane:

We are writing to provide you with an overview of upcoming changes to the School of Engineering’s IT services.

The overarching goal of all university IT is to provide you with robust, secure resources and deliver them in the most efficient way practical.
In the past, the School of Engineering and UITS have partnered in select areas and operated independently in others as we pursued these objectives both individually and in concert. The recent security breach and Provost’s charge to better centralize institutional IT assets have prompted our two organizations to reevaluate operations. The School of Engineering, in partnership with UITS, has elected to migrate IT services to UITS’s central portfolio. This move will eliminate duplication with a clear priority of reducing the typical risks associated with running IT services.

School of Engineering technical staff and UITS will continue meeting to determine how to execute changes with the least amount of disruption to the School of Engineering. At this point, we are planning to migrate:

  • all computers in the School of Engineering, including all university owned desktops and laptops running Windows, Mac, or Linux, to the UITS managed desktop platform.
  • the School of Engineering’s email to the Office 365 platform.
  • servers that are maintained by faculty or departments to the UITS Active Directory.

The migration activities will begin over the winter break and continue through the beginning of the spring semester. During and after this process, all mail addressed to your current School of Engineering email address, name@engr.uconn.edu, will be automatically delivered to your new account.

Your departmental support person will continue to be your primary point of contact for technical support. In addition to providing you with additional information about the migration, they can bring your questions and concerns to the larger project group. You will also receive additional communication from the School of Engineering and UITS staff during the process to give you advance notice of changes.

We appreciate your support and understanding during this migration. Please do not hesitate to contact us with comments, questions, and concerns.
