Migration and Network Reconfiguration

This message is being transmitted on behalf of Kazem Kazerounian, SoE Dean and Michael Mundrane, UITS CIO &VPIT:

Dear SoE faculty, staff, and graduate students,

We are writing to update you on the status of the School of Engineering’s migration to central IT services and to notify you of the activities that will conclude this transition.

Over the past year, SoE and UITS have collaborated to migrate faculty and staff email to Office 365; transition SoE computers to the UConn domain; and install Configuration Manager on Windows workstations to facilitate central deployment of updates and patches.  This leverages institutionally provided capabilities and facilitates IT best operating practices within SoE.  Similarly, it is a strongly recommended approach to formally collect common equipment classes onto independent networks with distinct security postures.  The final stage of the SoE migration will inventory individual clients (e.g., laptops, desktops, and printers) and servers (e.g. Web, mail, file services) and transition them to separate networks.  This segmentation will enable implementation of appropriate access and operating controls, restricting unwanted and potentially exploitative inbound access to clients while helping to ensure that remotely accessible services are also protected.  The UITS and SoE team will begin these activities next month and will proceed one building at a time.  Most people will not notice a change, but those intending to continue running remotely accessible services will need to coordinate with the migration team.  Additional information will be forthcoming to better define remotely accessible services and to provide instructions on how to move them without disruption.

We want to thank you for your ongoing patience and cooperation.  Through the efforts of everyone involved within UITS and SoE, we have made real progress towards a safer, easier to maintain IT environment within the school.

Regards,

Kazem Kazerounian  &  Michael Mundrane
